WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., April 8, 2016 — After 12 years Godspell returns to the Hilltop! The original musical was first staged at Kelly Theatre during the 2003-2004 season. The updated version of the show opens at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, April 14 at Kelly Theater.

The musical by Stephen Schwartz is based upon the Gospel according to St. Matthew. Originally directed by John-Michael Tebelak the first production opened off Broadway in 1971. In this retelling of the original sensation, contemporary references and dazzling new arrangements make Godspell 2012 fresh and exciting.

Godspell was the first major musical theatre offering from 3-time Grammy and Academy Award winner Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin, Children Of Eden); and it took the world by storm. Led by the international hit, “Day By Day,” Godspell features a parade of beloved songs including “Prepare Ye The Way Of The Lord,” “Learn Your Lessons Well,” “All For The Best,” “All Good Gifts,” “Turn Back, O Man” and “By My Side.”

According to director and Associate Professor of Theater Michael Aulick, the current production will be slightly different.

“There is an additional song and some of the standard songs have a little different rhythm to them. There are modern references and updates. In fact, Donald Trump makes an appearance at one point. The feel of the play, however, remains the same,” said Aulick.

Senior Elijah Boyles plays Jesus Christ. Jesus recruits a group of followers and teaches them various lessons through song and dance. The musical deals with the last days of Jesus and includes dramatized versions of several well-known parables.

“Elijah is super talented student who has been performing for years and has had some professional credits. The nice thing about this show is that Elijah has to balance the singing, dancing and acting. It makes him continue to grow and develop,” said Aulick.

Boyles transferred to WLU from Pace University in New York City, N.Y. He is a recipient of multiple national awards and was the highest ranked student from West Virginia at last year’s Southeastern Theater Conference (SETC) screening auditions.

The cast also includes Nathan James as Judas, Brady Dunn as George, Chad Grubb as Nick, Brent Kimball as Telly, along with Alex Franke, Gabby Bennett, Geena Diomedi, Amanda Tamplen, Meaghan Macey, Elizabeth Conley and Sarah Lemley.

WLU adjunct professor of dance, Jill Howard, is the choreographer and Assistant Professor of Music Scott Glysson is the musical director for the production.

Curtain continues at 7:30 p.m., April 15, 16 and at 3 p.m., April 17.
