WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. — West Liberty University proudly inducted five students into Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society, during a ceremony held January 22 in the Chapel Social Room.
“We had the honor this year of inducting what must be the most diverse induction class in Sigma Tau Delta history,” said Dr. Steve Criniti, Professor of English at West Liberty University. “We inducted a Math major, a Data Science major, a Theater major, and a Social Work double major, alongside a more traditional English Education major. Contrary to wanting to put up gates at the clubhouse door, so to speak, we in the English program are beaming with pride that such a diverse class of students has excelled in their English and language learning and have shown an interest in remaining active in an English-centric organization. We couldn’t be more pleased with the interdisciplinarity displayed by this year’s class.”
This year’s inductees are:
• Daisy Deaton, a senior Theater major with minors in Creative Writing and Dance from Lost Creek, W.Va.
• Sarah Dunfee, a senior English Education major from Bellaire, Ohio.
• Gwyneth Horzempa, a junior Data Science major with a Pre-Law minor from Pittsburgh, Pa.
• Elizabeth Ivanac, a junior Math Education major with a minor in English Literature from Burgettstown, Pa.
• Zion Kern, a sophomore double major in English: Writing & Rhetoric and Social Work from Charles Town, W.Va.
To qualify for membership, students must complete at least three semesters of college coursework, complete multiple advanced English courses beyond general education requirements, earn a B or higher in English coursework, and maintain a minimum 3.75 cumulative GPA.
West Liberty’s Omicron Nu chapter was originally chartered in 1976 and was reinstated last year after a period of dormancy. The 2026 inductees join more than 200 students who have been honored through the chapter since its founding.
“The revitalization of our Omicron Nu chapter reflects the strength and momentum of English studies at West Liberty,” Criniti added. “It’s exciting to see our students earning national recognition and taking advantage of opportunities that extend far beyond campus.”
Founded in 1924, Sigma Tau Delta recognizes high achievement in English language, literature, and writing while fostering literacy and scholarship across the discipline.
