The new software will be available for the fall 2025 semester, replacing an outdated system.
Developed by educational technology company, Instructure, Canvas’ intuitive platform supports innovative teaching, streamlines course management, and provides robust tools to foster student engagement and success. Students will benefit from improved accessibility, seamless mobile integration, and powerful collaboration tools that promote deeper learning.
WLU Center for Teaching, Learning, and Online Education Director Dr. Merilee Madera further explains how the platform will serve students.
“The decision to adopt Canvas reflects our commitment to providing an enhanced educational experience for students across all courses, not just online offerings” Madera says. “With Canvas, we’re empowering our entire academic community with a cutting-edge platform designed to facilitate success in the digital age,” she adds.
The platform also supports the University’s strategic goals of cultivating academic excellence, supporting student growth and success, and leveraging technology to meet the evolving demands of higher education.
WLU Provost Dr. Cathy Monteroso explains how adopting the new systems aligns with the University’s mission and strategic plan.
“The transition to Canvas as our learning management system aligns seamlessly with West Liberty University’s mission by enhancing innovation and excellence in teaching and learning,” Monteroso says. “By adopting Canvas, we reaffirm our commitment to preparing students as leaders and lifelong learners in their communities and professions,” she adds.
Students will be able to access Canvas from a phone app, adding to its convenience. The University is currently conducting training sessions for faculty and staff to ensure a seamless roll-out in the fall.
