WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. — Fourteen West Liberty University employees graduated from the Aspire U employee leadership program on Friday, April 17, 2026. The group was the second to complete the program, joining 10 who graduated in the program’s first year.

Over the course of the year, the group engaged in monthly, day-long sessions focused on leadership development, including exploring leadership theories, hearing from guest speakers, and meeting with community leaders in Wheeling.

“This program has given me the opportunity to grow as a leader in ways I didn’t expect, learning how to balance expectations with empathy, communicate more effectively, and build a team environment where people feel supported and accountable,” said Dr. Tammy McClain, Chair of Psychology.

“This program expanded my views on what leadership means and gave me a lot of helpful resources to improve my leadership skills,” said Laura Musilli, Director of Grants and Revenue. “I also enjoyed the opportunity to connect with various colleagues from across campus and benefit from their varied perspectives.”

Participants complete a class project as part of the experience. This year, they are developing signage for campus buildings to better direct users to accessible entrances, exits, elevators, and parking areas. They are also creating companion videos that demonstrate these routes. In addition, the class has produced a training manual for student tour guides, offering practical tips for accommodating diverse groups.

Program participants included:

  • Bree Blum, Administrative Assistant
  • Jessica Davis, Chair of Nursing
  • Kyle Lutz, Administrative Assistant
  • Lisa McGee, Human Resources Representative
  • Michelle Panepucci, Director of Admissions
  • Nicole Lizon, Instructor of English
  • Rexall Lancaster, Assistant Athletic Director
  • Sarah Fonner, Director of Housing and Residential Life
  • Dr. Sarah Schimmel, Faculty in Education
  • Whitney Merinar, Registrar
  • Jennifer Little, Accounts Payable Manager
  • Laura Musilli, Director of Grants and Revenue
  • Dr. Tammy McClain, Chair of Psychology
  • Dr. Martin White, Faculty in Criminal Justice

The program is facilitated by Dr. Tim Borchers, President, and Melissa Carroll, Director of Human Resources.

“Being part of the Aspire U Leadership Program was a really meaningful experience for me, where I gained practical skills, useful insights, and a better understanding of effective leadership,” said Sarah Fonner, Director of Housing and Residential Life. “It pushed me to grow both professionally and personally, helping me build confidence and improve my communication and decision-making, and it continues to shape how I approach my work.”

Rex Lancaster, Assistant Athletic Director, said, “The leadership program pushed me to reflect on my leadership style and be more intentional in my daily work. I realized I do my best when I’m adaptable and focused on supporting others.”

Program participants from both cohorts are eligible to receive the “Communication-Based Leadership Microcredential” offered by the University. Employees interested in the 2026-27 cohort may apply through Bamboo, and applications are due May 31, 2026.

“As a new employee to WLU, Aspire U has helped me in many ways, including learning to know my new colleagues better and learning more about the local leadership in Wheeling,” said Whitney Merinar, Registrar. “Our team’s project has strengthened my commitment to removing barriers for students and building systems that make success more achievable for everyone.”
