West Liberty University has a long tradition of Steel Band dating back to the early 1980s when it was first brought to campus by Dr. Mark Williams. At that time, West Liberty Steel Band was one of the only steel bands in the country! After being on hiatus for almost ten years, the steel band is back in full operation under the direction of Director of Percussion and World Music Studies, Prof. Mitchell Greco. Thanks to generous donations, the pans were reconditioned in 2016 by Shelly Irvine and are now back in action on the Hilltop!

Due to popular the demand, there are now two steel bands: The Beginning Steel Band and the Advanced Band. No experience is necessary to join the Beginning Steel Band. Students may choose to audition for the Advanced Band after their first or second semester in the Beginning Band. The Advanced Steel Band is an active ensemble that performs for a variety of different events and concerts both on- and off-campus.
