WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., February 27, 2024 — West Liberty University began celebrating Women’s History Month on February 24 with a tip-off event during halftime of the women’s basketball game that recognized female student-athletes & Title IX. The month-long celebration will feature events for students, faculty and staff to come together and empower women on campus and in our community.
“Women’s History Month is important because it highlights the achievements of women, both past and present, who have helped build and mold our campus, community and country. Women throughout history have created opportunities for me and so many others. This month is an opportunity to learn about great leaders, activists and pioneers through on-campus programming and independently, so we hope you take some time to join us this month!” said Kate Billings, Chair of the Women’s Empowerment Subcommittee and Director of Student Life/ Title IX Coordinator.
A weekly book club will meet on March 8, 11 and 25 at 8:30 a.m. in the Student Leadership Center to discuss “Feminism is for Everybody” by bell hooks.
March 12 will be a Paint-n-Sit at 6 p.m. for the campus in the Student Union Ballroom. Mocktails will be served, and all supplies are provided for creating a guided painting with the assistance of College of Liberal and Creative Arts Professor Terri Giller and the Creative Art Therapy Club.
From March 13-17, the Panhellenic Council will celebrate each day with different events with WLU’s sororities. For more details on specific events, visit their Instagram at @wlupanhellenic.
On Wednesday, March 20, WLU will be taking 25 students to Washington D.C. to view the cherry blossoms and the National Museum of Women in the Arts.
The Empowerment Panel is returning to WLU’s celebration of Women’s History Month this year. The event will take place on March 27 at noon in the\ Student Leadership Center.
Ending the month of celebration will be Transgender Day of Visibility on March 31 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Union Ballroom.
“One of my favorite things about West Liberty is our tradition of celebrating “Women’s Empowerment Month” rather than “Women’s History Month.” Of course, knowing our history is important, but our focus on how to help all women achieve their full potential–through making art, participating in sports, listening to the wisdom of others, and embracing our diverse gifts with confidence and generosity–this is, I think, the perfect way to celebrate this month.” said Dr. Cecilia Konchar-Farr the Dean of the College of Liberal and Creative Arts and co-chair of the subcommittee.
