WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., Feb. 3, 2016 — West Liberty University continues its tradition of encouraging good behavior with its annual Random Acts of Kindness Week. Events will be held throughout the week of Feb. 8-12.
“Our kindness week is a great way for our students to create a welcoming and positive environment both on our campus and in our community,” said Campus Activities Coordinator Kate Billings. “We want the students to see the world around them and see how even the littlest act can change someone’s day or even more!”
This year marks the third time a whole week has been devoted to kindness on the Hilltop.
“I’m proud that we’re doing the Random Acts of Kindness week. Since I arrived on campus, I have seen how West Liberty University students care about others and their community, and want to make a difference,” said President Stephen Greiner.
“We try to involve a bunch of different student groups with the mixture of activities,” said Billings.
Along with the special acts of kindness events the week is filled with sports activities, arts and crafts and other events for on-campus residents and commuter students.
The week will start off with free hot chocolate in the College Union on Monday, Feb. 8. The day will continue with the Kindness Fair held from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., Monday in the College Union Ballroom, where students will have time to donate food, write thank you letters, and engage in other activities.
Paint and Sit at 8 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 9, offers another friendly activity for students and takes place in the Alumni Room of the Union.
The goodness continues with a Sweetness Fair, from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., Feb. 10, also in the ballroom. This time students and staff will have a chance to purchase treats from student organizations as they help support local charities.
On Thursday, Feb. 11 students will be collecting warm winter coats for the community at the Hilltopper’s home basketball games. The Toppers take on Concord University, with women playing at 5:30 p.m. and men at 7:30 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to bring a coat to share and all garments will be given to the Ohio Valley Jaycee’s to help local families!
Free Donut Friday will be the kindness activity at 10 a.m., Friday, Feb. 12. All students are invited to start the day off with a treat and grab a donut in the College Union on their way to or from class.
Later that day, the official kindness week concludes with the rubber duck giveaway at Kroger, Mt. de Chantal Road location, on Feb. 12. WLU students will reach out to the neighboring off-campus community by presenting children with cute rubber ducks carrying positive messages and spreading kindness awareness to adults.
“We hope that the kindness continues into daily life and our week inspires everyone to be a better person,” said Billings.
