Sixteen teams competed in the round-robin style tournament. Each round consisted of six toss-up questions which could be answered by any member of either team at any point, and a single team question with up to four correct answers, with teams earning points for each correct response. Teams conferred, came to a consensus and wrote their answers.
Wheeling Park had amassed 21 team points at the end of the round-robin tournament, which put the team in second place behind Sissonville High School’s 22-point tally, and both schools advanced to the championship round. In the championship round, Wheeling Park prevailed by defeating Sissonville 70-30, thereby earning the championship.
Galik noted Wheeling Park had won three consecutive state championships leading up to the 2014 tournament. However, Wheeling Park was unable to take part in last year’s contest due to inclement weather.
Galik said he is proud of this year’s state championship team for its achievement.
