Dr. Aaron Monseau – 2003

February 8, 2016 By WLU Alumni Staff

Iconic name on the Hilltop now part of 2016 Olympic Games.

February 8, 2016 by Maureen Zambito

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., Feb. 8, 2015 — Alumnus Aaron Joel “A.J.” Monseau, M.D. was named team physician for USA Wrestling last week. The WVU Medicine emergency medicine and sports medicine physician is the son of legendary WLU wrestling coach Dr. Vince Monseau, who led the Hilltoppers from 1973 – 2004, compiling a 359-221-7 team record.

This past fall, the Hilltopper wrestling room was officially dubbed the Vince Monseau Wrestling Room and a scholarship was begun in the Monseau name.

Dr. A.J. Monseau has worked with the USA national team for the past six years and is looking forward to this new opportunity at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro, which begin Friday, Aug. 5 and end on Sunday, Aug. 21.

Here at WLU, he wrestled for his father and was a tri-captain his senior season in which he finished sixth to earn All-American honors in the NCAA Division II national championships in 2003. That was quite an accomplishment as he entered the event ranked 18th.

In addition to his exploits on the mat, the younger Monseau was a true student-athlete at WLU where he was selected to the Academic All-American team four times from 2000 – 03. During his undergraduate years, Monseau maintained a perfect 4.0 grade-point average, with a double major in biology and chemistry.

Monseau is the son of Vince and Kay Monseau.

Coach Vince Monseau still coaches wrestling at Magnolia High School where he is assisted by recent wrestling alumnus Danny Doyle.

NOTE: An article written by KIM NORTH in the Wheeling Intelligencer was used in preparing this WLU press release.
