THE WELKIN by Lucy Kirkwood
The year is 1759 and the country awaits the anticipated arrival of Halley’s Comet. The Daughter of Lady Wax has been murdered and the residents of this rural town are out for blood. Sally Poppy has been found guilty of the crime, along with her lover who has already been hanged. Sally’s journey to her noose depends on whether she is lying about her claim that she is pregnant. Sally’s fate lies in the hands of a jury of matrons who are empanelled to come to a unanimous decision. Sally’s fate is in the hands of the women, some of whom have a past with Sally that may influence their decision. The twelve must wrestle with the information to make a life changing decision in a world governed by men.
Think 12 Angry Jurors meets The Crucible written by a strong, contemporary female voice.
The Welkin contains mature content including, but not limited to, depictions of violence, discussions of murder and capital punishment, and simulated bodily functions. The play includes references to sexual assault, pregnancy loss, infant death, and graphic descriptions of violence. It also portrays misogyny, class prejudice, and sizeist language reflective of 18th-century England.
