About

The West Liberty University Theatre Program

The WLU Theatre Program is part of the university’s College of Arts and Communication.  As part of the Department of Music and Theatre, the program has two full-time faculty, two adjunct faculty, and numerous staff/contracted artists.  The program currently offers one degree: a B.S. in Communication: Theatre.  However the faculty have been developing the program to be able to offer multiple degree seeking options, including a B.A. in Theatre (with areas of emphasis) and a B.A. in Theatre Education.  In addition to offering the coursework needed for graduation, the program maintains an aggressive production season.  The Hilltop Players typically produce four to five main stage productions a year with opportunities for students to participate in a touring children’s theatre company and student-directed performances.  The season is chosen to offer a variety of ‘styles’ of shows giving our students the chance to be well-rounded artists, regularly performing contemporary dramas, comedies, classics, musicals, holiday extravaganzas, and children’s theatre.

Mission Statement

We strive to provide our students with an outstanding undergraduate education in theatre that is necessary to make the transition into a course of graduate study or entry-level position in a professional theatre.

Approach to Productions

The West Liberty University Theatre Program is committed to providing a variety of opportunities to our students in performance, believing that a well-rounded artist is more prepared to enter the world of professional theatre or graduate studies.  Many hours go into looking for the best projects for our students, the productions that will challenge them to grow and blossom as artists, and decisions are based on their ‘needs’ rather than the faculty’s ‘wants’.  We are a STUDENT-FOCUSED theatre program.
