Safety Committee

Safety Committee

A collaborative committee dedicated to strengthening campus safety through communication, review, and continuous improvement.

Working Together

for a Safer Campus

The West Liberty University Safety Committee brings together students, employees, and administration to promote a safe and healthy campus environment. Through regular meetings, incident review, inspections, and open communication, the committee works to identify risks, improve safety practices, and support ongoing campus-wide improvements.

Committee

Overview

The Safety Committee supports West Liberty University’s commitment to protecting the health and safety of all students, employees, and visitors. It serves as a structured forum for shared input, consistent decision-making, and ongoing safety improvement.

  • Provide a voice for both employees and management on safety matters
  • Improve campus safety and reduce injuries and incidents
  • Strengthen communication around safety concerns and solutions
  • Ensure consistent review and follow-up on safety issues

The committee includes 4–7 members appointed by the Health and Safety Specialist and may include alternates. Members serve one-year terms (March–March).

The Health and Safety Specialist oversees program development and maintenance. Committee records are maintained in the Myers Maintenance Building (Room 104).

Meeting Structure:

  • Meetings are held monthly
  • Agendas are shared in advance
  • Attendance and participation are strongly encouraged
  • A secretary records and distributes meeting minutes
  • Decisions are made by majority vote (minimum 3 members required)

Typical meeting topics include:

  • Previous meeting minutes
  • Incident and near-miss reviews
  • Inspection updates
  • Training updates
  • Open safety concerns and new business

All incidents (injuries, illnesses, property damage, or near misses) are investigated promptly by Campus Police and/or the Health and Safety Specialist.

  • Focus is on fact-finding, not fault-finding
  • Supervisors must report incidents immediately
  • Findings are reviewed by the committee
  • Emergency meetings may be called when urgent action is required

Monthly safety inspections are conducted across all campus facilities. Findings include hazards, locations, and recommended corrective actions, which are reviewed during committee meetings.

Students and employees are encouraged to report hazards or submit suggestions. Reports can be sent to:
wlsafety@westliberty.edu
All submissions are reviewed and addressed by the Health and Safety team.

Safety training is coordinated by the Health and Safety Specialist and department supervisors. Training needs are identified through committee input, and attendance records are maintained for compliance.

The Safety Committee evaluates its program annually to ensure effectiveness, alignment with safety goals, and continuous improvement across campus operations.
