Canvas
Every WLU course has a site in Canvas, the university’s learning management system (LMS). Online courses are delivered fully through Canvas. For classroom-based and hybrid courses, instructors may also use Canvas to share learning materials, collect assignments, administer tests, and post grades. Regardless of course format, your course syllabus will be available in Canvas.
Canvas works with current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari on Windows, Mac, and other devices. For the best experience, use a desktop or laptop computer. Canvas can also be accessed on mobile devices through a web browser or the Canvas Student app.
Students access Canvas through the WLU Single Sign-On (SSO) Portal.
Courses become available in Canvas on the Thursday before the corresponding term begins.
Schedule changes are processed in Canvas twice daily, at noon and 8 p.m. New courses will not appear immediately after a schedule change.
Instructure, the maker of Canvas, provides 24/7 Canvas support to WLU students, faculty, and staff. While in Canvas, select Help from the Global Navigation Menu to access support options.
For Canvas-related questions not resolved through 24/7 Canvas Support, submit a CTLOE Help Ticket.
For problems logging in, including password resets or multifactor authentication (MFA), submit an IT Help Ticket. You can also use the Forgot Password option in the WLU Single Sign-On Portal. Instructure and the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Online Education (CTLOE) cannot assist with login-related issues.
Passport to Canvas is a self-paced resource that introduces the tools and skills you will use in Canvas, including navigating courses, submitting assignments, checking grades, and communicating with instructors and classmates. The course is not graded, and you may complete it at your own pace.
Because Passport to Canvas is a public course, you do not need to log in through SSO to access it.
The Canvas Student app provides mobile access to course content, assignments, grades, announcements, notifications, and messages. Instructions for downloading and using the app are available in Module 9 of Passport to Canvas.
Online
Learning
This section provides important information and resources for students taking online and technology-supported courses at WLU. Students are expected to use course materials appropriately and comply with U.S. copyright law and the West Liberty University Acceptable Use Policy. For additional information about copyright law, visit the U.S. Copyright Office.
NC-SARA Compliance
West Liberty University is authorized to enroll out of state students in online courses and programs in accordance with the State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (SARA) managed by the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (NC-SARA). More than 2,400 institutions voluntarily participate in SARA from the 49 member states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Currently, the state of California does not participate in SARA.
If a student located in a State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (SARA) state has a complaint about their online course or program, it must first go through the institution’s standard procedure for the resolution of student grievances.
If a student is not satisfied with the outcome of the institutional process, a complaint may be brought to the West Virginia SARA portal entity.
West Virginia SARA Portal Entity Contact Information and Complaint Form
Resolution of the complaint by the West Virginia SARA portal entity is final.
