WV Academy of Science Meets at Highlands Center

WLU’s Highlands Center is conveniently located in the Highlands Shopping Complex.

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., March 29, 2019 — West Liberty University hosts the West Virginia Academy of Science annual meeting at its Highlands Center on Saturday, March 30, 2019.

More than 100 science professors, graduate and undergraduate students will be in attendance from 11 West Virginia colleges and universities. The Linsly School also will take part in the meeting, which includes poster presentations and more.

President Stephen Greiner will give the opening remarks at 8:30 a.m. and the morning agenda includes several special speakers, including, Dr. Matt Lamanna, the principal dinosaur researcher at Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Pittsburgh.

Lamanna’s presentation is scheduled for 10:20 a.m. and is entitled, “New Fossil Discoveries from the End of the Age of Dinosaurs in Antarctica.”

Other special guest speakers, times and topics include: Dr. Gary Rankin at 8:45 a.m., “Biomedical Research in West Virginia: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow” and
Dr. Tom Pauley at 9:25 a.m., “Life and Times of a West Virginia Herpetologist: 52 Years of Searching Hollows and Ridges.”

The afternoon session focuses on student posters and presentations.

The meeting concludes at 5 pm. with the Presentation of the Dr. John Warner Outstanding Teacher Award.

The West Virginia Academy of Science was founded at West Virginia University on November 28, 1924 and was a child of the West Virginia Scientific Society.

The purpose of the society was to ‘bring about a closer affiliation among scientists of the State and to organize as a group to national recognition’, as stated by Dr. G.R. Bancroft, then president of the University Scientific Society.

WLU Professor of Biology Dr. Zachary Loughman is the outgoing president of the academy and WLU Professor of Biology Dr. Joseph Horzempa is the editor of the journal, Proceedings of the West Virginia Academy of Science, which is an open access, online, peer reviewed scientific journal.

The Academy is intended to stimulate research by West Virginia scientists and Academy members and provide them an outlet for publication of their research results in the areas of Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Geology, Mathematics, Mining, Physics, Psychology, Science Education, History of Science, Philosophy of Science, Social Science, Health Science, and Environmental Science.
