SCIFI Welcomes Prospective Students

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., April 1, 2019 — West Liberty University’s College of Sciences presents a SCIFI admissions event that introduces young people to the academic choices available on the Hilltop. Taking place from 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., Monday, April 1, SCIFI takes place in the Campbell Hall of Health Sciences.

Open to all high schools, students signed up for three different class sessions as they discovered what is offered at WLU.

“Visiting students will learn about the many science programs offered here at West Liberty University through these classes, designed to pique the interest of curious students considering their future,” explained Dr. Deanna Schmitt, assistant professor of biology and chair of the recruitment committee in the College of Sciences.

“It’s shaping up to be a big success and we welcome our visitors. We are here to help.”

175 students from John Marshall High School, Avella High School, Bethlehem Center High School, Steubenville High School, Brooke High School, Fort Cherry High School, Hundred High School and Weir High School signed up to take advantage of the SCIFI event.

STEM classes and the major offered include: Snakes (biology), Chemistry In Everyday Life (chemistry), Red Plague (microbiology), Zoo Science For A Day (zoo science), Nom Nom The Psychology Of Food (psychology), Yuck Now That’s Gross (dental hygiene), I’ve Got Something To Say (speech and audiology), and Nursing: To The Er And Beyond (nursing).

WLU’s College of Sciences prides itself on its student-focused teaching, learning and research environment dedicated to excellence in undergraduate and graduate education.

Its faculty have been lauded for teaching in notable ways including, Dr. Joseph Horzempa, associate professor of biology, named the 2017 West Virginia Professor of the Year by the Faculty Merit Foundation and Dr. Zachary Loughman, associate professor of biology, also a WV Professor of the Year in 2014.
