WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., Jan. 14, 2015 — Scholarships improve access to higher education and for eight West Liberty University non-traditional students a recent cash award means a lot.
“Our students really appreciate the special scholarship West Liberty University awards deserving students enrolled in the School of Professional Studies programs. Most of them hold down full-time jobs and have to juggle many responsibilities and an award like this means a lot,” said Dr. Thomas Michaud, Dean of the School of Professional Studies.
The one-time award is for $1,250 and is applied to tuition. All the students receiving scholarship are enrolled in either the Bachelor of Arts in Leadership and Administration (BLA) or the Master of Professional Studies (MPS).
Students receiving the award from Hancock County include:
- Steven Lauck, BLA
- Sherri Tomblin, BLA
Students receiving the award from Ohio County include:
- John Cornforth, BLA
- Amanda Crow, BLA
- Sara Hall, BLA
- Teresa Moore, BLA
- Benjamin Nobile, BLA
- Kacey Orr, MPS
The scholarships were funded by a local private foundation, according to Executive Director of Development Angela Zambito Hill.
West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission stated in their most recent Master Plan that, “West Virginians of all ages have the right to a quality education that empowers them to act as productive members of the citizenry and workforce.”
“Increasing access to postsecondary education for both traditional and non-traditional aged West Virginians is very important and we are pleased to be able to support our students in this manner,” noted Michaud.
“Adult Learners may pursue any degree at West Liberty University however, we know that adults have busy schedules and complicated lives and pursuing a traditional degree program is not always possible. WLU’s School of Professional Studies is specifically designed to serve the adult student who needs a flexible schedule and wants to finish in as short a time as possible,” he said.
The Highlands Center is located along Cabela Drive in the Highlands shopping complex, off I-70, seven miles east of Wheeling.
