WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., April 28, 2016 — West Liberty University’s Music Department will hold its annual Honors Recital, at 3 p.m., Saturday, April 30, in Elbin Auditorium, College Hall. The concert is free and open to the public.
“The annual Honors Recital celebrates and represents some of the finest musical talents in WLU’s Division of Music. Student performers are selected for the Honors Recital through a competitive audition,” said Dr. Gerald Lee, professor of piano.
Five WLU students will perform a variety of music in the recital including (in order of performance): Shane Powell, performing marimba and multi-percussion; Jessica Gulisek, performing piano; John Heiserman performing opera selections for tenor; Alexander Gordon performing piano and Gabriella Saporito performing flute music.
Powell is a sophomore pursuing the Bachelor of Music degree in Percussion Performance. He is from Claysville, Pa. and the son of Jennifer Dawn and Mark Andrew Powell. Powell studies percussion with Professor Brian Baldauff and upon graduation, he plans to pursue a master’s degree in timpani performance.
Gulisek is a sophomore pursuing the Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance. She is from Belmont, Ohio and the daughter of Mary Jo and Thomas Gulisek. Gulisek studies piano with Dr. Gerald Lee and upon graduation, she plans to pursue a career as a collaborative pianist, performing locally as well as abroad.
Heiserman is a sophomore pursuing the Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance. He is from Weirton, W.Va. and the son of Nikki Lynn and John Patrick Heiserman. Heiserman studies voice with Dr. Linda Cowan and upon graduation, he plans to continue his studies in vocal performance at the master’s level followed by a career in opera.
Gordon is a junior pursuing the Bachelor of Music degree in Music Technology. He is from Wheeling, WV and the son of Valleri and Brian Gordon. Alexander studies piano with Dr. Gerald Lee and upon graduation, he plans to continue his studies at the graduate level, focusing on music technology, composition, and piano performance.
Saporito is a sophomore pursuing the Bachelor of Music degree in Flute Performance. She is from Philippi, W.Va. and the daughter of Laura and Gabe Saporito. Saporito studies flute with Professor Wendy Webb Kumer and upon graduation, she plans to pursue a master’s degree in flute performance en route to becoming a performing artist and flute teacher at the collegiate level.
WLU’s Department of Music and Theater is housed within the College of Arts and Communication. It offers the Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance degree, the Bachelor of Arts in Music Education degree and the Bachelor of Music Technology degree programs.
