The Early Literacy Council

“Fall into Literacy”

The Early Literacy Council is a special interest group of the WV Reading Association.  Members recently met to establish alliances and collaboration to foster early literacy.  Those in attendance were Kathy Chapmin, Vice-President of the West Virginia Reading Association, Dr. Mary Marocki, Karen Ashbrook, President of the Early Literacy Council, Linda Miller, Officer of the Literacy Council, Krenna Allender, Early Education Specialist at West Liberty University, Sarah Schimmel, Special Education Specialist at West Liberty University, Angela Icard, Assistant Professor of Reading Education at Bethany College, several West Liberty University pre-service teachers, and teachers and staff from local school districts.  Participants were presented with an array of materials and information related to early literacy; They were also invited to participate in early literacy make-and-take activities and provided with the opportunity to network with professionals with years of experience and rich backgrounds in the field.

To join the Early Literacy Council, contact Karen Ashbrook at kashbroo@comcast.net.  There is a $5.00 membership fee.   College students can obtain a membership to the WV Reading Association for $5.00.
