Dr. David R. Hanna, PT, DPT, MS, ATC Program Director/Professor

Dr. Hanna, is a native of Wheeling, West Virginia, and began his career in athletic training in 1996 at West Liberty University. From 1996-2005, he served as an athletic trainer at WLU, West Virginia University Institute of Technology, Sioux Valley Hospital, Elk Point Jefferson High School, University of South Dakota, the Wheeling Nailers, and the Ohio Valley Greyhounds. 

In 2005, he returned to the area to pursue a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree at Wheeling Jesuit University. While earning his doctorate, he was instrumental in the development and creation of the athletic training major at WJU. He graduated from the Doctor of Physical Therapy program in August 2007, and was hired as the department chair for the Athletic Training major at WJU. Dr. Hanna oversaw the program through its inaugural accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) in 2010. He also served WJU as adjunct instructor in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program.

Dr. Hanna returned to the Hilltop in August of 2012 to head the development of the Athletic Training Education major at WLU. As program director/associate professor, he is responsible for the curriculum development and overseeing the program through an accreditation process by the CAATE. In addition to these duties, he continues to adjunct in the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at WJU; he is an active physical therapist in the West Virginia Birth to Three System, early intervention. Dr. Hanna also works on a casual basis as a physical therapist at Wheeling Hospital.

Dr. Hanna’s graduates have found employment in clinics, high schools, and professional sports, as well as gaining successful acceptances into a wide variety of graduate schools in athletic training, physician assistant, counseling and psychology, physical therapy, and medical school.

Dr. Melessa Wohleber, DHSc, ATC Assistant Professor/Clinical Coordinator

  • BS in Athletic Training, West Virginia Wesleyan, WV

Dr. Wohleber has been a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) since 2000, and has worked clinically in various settings including high school, college (NCAA Division I), and military basic training at the US Coast Guard. Prior to joining WLU as faculty in the Athletic Training Program, Dr. Wohleber was a faculty researcher at the University of Pittsburgh Neuromuscular Research Laboratory, a co-investigator of the Injury Prevention and Human Performance Optimization initiatives with US Special Operations Forces (Air Force and Army). In addition to teaching courses within the College of Education & Human Performance, Dr. Wohleber coordinates and oversees the clinical education experiences for MSAT students.
