New iterations in the tobacco/nicotine product landscape have led to an increased threat to public health, particularly among youth. This presentation will explore the newest tobacco delivery devices, trends, and laws. Participants will discuss consequences of the changing landscape, the impact on public health among users, and the impact on schools.

“Integrating Movement in the Elementary Classroom”
Research shows that integrating movement in the classroom helps students learn better, decreases behavior problems, assists in making students healthier, and promotes a positive classroom culture. Participants in this workshop will learn why integrating movement is important, strategies for integrating movement, and behavior management techniques for integrating movement in a classroom environment, all while participating in some fun activities that they can implement immediately with students. (0ne, two, or three hours based upon need)

 

“Assessment Strategies for Physical Education that Maximizing Activity Time”
Overcome the barriers to assessing students in physical education!  Learn organizational and recording strategies that can be embedded in instruction and won’t significantly take away from activity time.  Participants will also come away with sample assessments for common units of instruction.

 

“Integrating Nutrition Education with the Core Four”
Students are desperately in need of nutrition education in order to lead a healthy lifestyle.  Participants will learn quick and easy strategies to integrate nutrition while learning concepts in math, science, language arts, and social studies at the same time! Research, sample activities, and recipes will be shared. (2 or 3 hours)

 

“Let’s Move In School:  Strategies to Implement a Wellness Policy that Works!”
Michelle Obama has kicked off the Let’s Move Campaign in order to improve the health of our students nationwide.  In this workshop, learn how one school district conducted a needs assessment, changed their Wellness Policy, and adopted a Comprehensive Physical Activity Program that gained national attention. See results such as increased academic achievement, huge gains in parent involvement, better behavior among students, and an improved classroom culture in your school as well!  Tips from the trenches can be shared regarding programs such as morning workouts, healthy celebrations, fitness clubs, recess running clubs, incentive programs, community partnerships, and classroom movement activities. (2 or 3  hours)

 

“Technology in Physical Education”
The gym is a great place to incorporate technology!  In this session, learn new and exciting ways to integrate technology in physical education. Explore technologies with some hands-on activities that are relevant for physical education.

 

“Creating a Culture of Wellness With a Coordinated School Health Program”
With the obesity epidemic looming over our nation, and the American Heart Association predicting that today’s children will be the first generation in America to have a shorter lifespan than their parents, now is the time to create a culture of wellness in our schools. Participants will learn about the 8 Components of a Coordinated School Health Program and ways to create a vision with long-term goals.  A variety of programs will be reviewed including: Let’s Move!, Run for Something Better, WV Schools on the Move and Communities on the Move, Alliance for a Healthier Generation and many others! “if you’re not modeling what you’re teaching, you’re teaching something else!”
