Our faculty worked with Mrs. Tammi Secrist, WLU Director of Marketing, to promote our outstanding programs at the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Cheerleading Competition last Saturday at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling. Special thanks to Assistant Professor Cathy Monteroso and Instructor Herb Minch for representing West Liberty and the College of Education at the event. They represent the incredible faculty engagement that typifies our program. The College of Education provides an engaged learning environment where our students can develop their true potential in a close teacher-student relationship. =The ETS Praxis Program Update Meeting=
Our faculty, Mrs. JoJo Ullom, Dr. Traci Tuttle, and Ms. Nicole Davis, represented our Teacher Education Program in the ETS Praxis Program Update Meeting for the state of West Virginia. During this ETS-Praxis overview overview, teacher education faculty from across the state gained insight into the following updates: (1) how Praxis tests are developed; (2) regenerated Praxis Program tests in the state of West Virginia; (3) free Praxis services for teacher candidates; (4) ETS Data Manager (with live demonstration); (5) ETS Title II Services (available to all universities and colleges); and (6) new innovation at ETS.
=Professional Activity at Ohio Educational Technology Conference=
Dr. Li-Wei Peng, Associate Professor of Instructional Technology, participated in the Ohio Educational Technology Conference, the largest P-20 state educational technology conference in the nation. Dr. Peng shared and exchanged new P-20 learning and innovation with other classroom technology professionals and enthusiasts.
=Book Study at Warwood Elementary School=
Dr. Judy Stechly, Professor of Education shared her pride over two of her student teachers, Sarah Wallbrown and Hillary Sayre; they presented to Warwood Elementary school teachers during their weekly book study. The student teachers presented two of the final chapters in the Daily 5 book that the teachers have been using for their book study. Sarah talked about the different aspects of the Daily 5 and when it is appropriate to add the next component. Hillary talked about the barometer child who may have an impact on the environment of the entire classroom. She talked about ways to work and help that child. Several of the school teachers were complimentary afterwards, with one teacher saying, “They did a great job! It’s very difficult to present in front of a group of teachers. They took a leap and did fantastic!” Another teacher commented on the presentation saying, “It was very interesting. I was writing down things the entire time in hopes that I can implement them in my classroom. Well done, girls!” Both Hillary and Sarah are student teaching in elementary education at Warwood Elementary School.
=In-Kind Donations Support Student Projects at Center for Arts and Education=
The Center for Arts and Education appreciates all the friends for your generosity in support of students projects by donating materials and tools to the Center. Thank you to Paula Lusk for volunteering to fix the Center’s sewing machines. Thank you to Traci Tuttle and Kathleen Wack for donating shoe boxes. Thank you to Jessica Zeigler for donating her Sizzix Small Die Cutter. Your assistance means so much to the Center but even more to our students. Your kind offer of help is always incredibly helpful and allows our students to reach their goals. The Center is collecting containers (with lids) for another student project. =WVHEPC’S Study-Abroad Trip this Summer!=
This program will be offered as a special topics class: Germany – Culture & Community. Participants will earn 3-4 hours of credit in the two weeks. The fee is $1,990, which covers tuition, room and board, breakfast, travel insurance, trips and extracurricular activities, but does not cover round-trip airfare. Limited spaces are available. To ensure participation, the application and $600 deposit is due March 15, 2015. Students will get to be a part of the university life at the University of Würzburg, travel to world-cultural heritage cities in Germany, attend an authentic German Bakery baking session and learn more about German education by visiting a Waldkindergarten (Forest Kindergarten). =hAPPy Friday Tools/Apps Learning=
Subtext is a digital reading program allowing classroom groups to exchange ideas in the pages of digital texts. This app includes free features (e.g., private group discussion, read offline, research) and premium features (e.g., progress track, text to speech, common core assignment template). This tool supports students in K-12 classrooms to analyze what they read, articulate what they think, and make connections between texts (e.g., ePub, PDF, ebooks) and the outside world. Teachers have integrated this app into the Language Arts class to foster analysis and writing skills.
