The second annual Entrepreneurs Pitch Contest was held September 26 at the WLU Center for Entrepreneurship’s downtown Wheeling business incubator, Intellectual Capitol, located in the First State Capitol Building. Entrepreneurs Vishesh Maskey and Tyler Jones tied for the top prize, each taking home $2,500 in funding for their new venture. This year’s Pitch Contest was sponsored by the WLU Center for Entrepreneurship, Regional Economic Development Partners and Wheeling Academy of Law and Science.
The Pitch Contest brings potential small business owners together with interested community partners to provide seed money for new start-ups with the help of nation 21. The candidates pitch their new business idea to the audience, which votes on the winning business. This year, seven hopeful entrepreneurs made presentations, according to Carrie White, Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship. “We are excited about the enthusiasm and interest shown in our second Pitch Contest. The local community truly wants to see small businesses open and grow in this area,” said White.
Contest participants and their business ideas included Vishesh Maskey, Spatial Decision Support System; Josh Slasor, Decibel; KJ Burley, WV Wellness; Karissa Duke, Waste Not; Tyler Jones, Fajita by the Foot; David McFarland, Mmmm! Popcorn; and Patrick Fisher, Mason Dixon BBQ Co.
