Dr. Melinda Kreisberg is a biology professor, director of Accreditation and Academic planning, and an Accreditation Liaison Officer for West Liberty University. She is also involved with the Hilltop Players, recently being the assistant director of “As it is in Heaven.”

Nursing students recognized with white coat ceremony

On Sept. 21, West Liberty’s nursing program held the annual white coat ceremony marking the third-year and BA-BS to BSN students’ transition into the professional field. 
 
This year, 25 junior nursing students donned their white coats as well as 10 students in the initial BA-BS to BSN program. 

West Liberty University offers new biology graduate programs

Starting this fall, West Liberty University is offering two new graduate programs. After going through several offices, including the West Liberty University Curriculum Committee, the Faculty Senate, West Liberty University Board of Governors, the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission and the Higher Learning Commission, WLU is now authorized to offer a Master of Science in Biology as well as a Master of Arts in Biology.

Chi Beta Phi taking steps to acknowledge domestic violence

The science honorarium Chi Beta Phi’s “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes,” an event to raise money and awareness about domestic violence, will be held on April 26 on the quad from 12 to 1 p.m. with a pre-walk session from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Professors named President, Editor of the West Virginia Academy of Science

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., April 12, 2017 — West Liberty University is now the workplace of both the president and editor of the West Virginia Academy of Science. Dr. Zachary Loughman was selected president and Dr. Joseph Horzempa is the new editor of the Proceedings of the West Virginia Academy of Sciences, the organization’s journal. Both are professors of biology in the College of Sciences.

WLU Foundation receives third-largest estate gift

The West Liberty Foundation has accepted an estate gift of over $800,000 from former professor Dr. Lawerence H. Talley’s estate. 

The estate gift will fund four-year, full-ride scholarships for incoming College of Sciences freshmen students majoring in either chemistry or biology. 

Zoo Science major succeeds, grows in Arnett Hall

West Liberty University’s Zoo Science major offers new opportunities for students interested in caring for wildlife. This new major started as a discussion in fall 2015 and stepped into full swing at the beginning of this academic year. Students will receive hands-on training at Oglebay’s Good Zoo and on-site animal facilities here at WLU. 

Science majors will benefit from new lab equipment upgrades

In December, WLU received a $19,300 grant to purchase devices that will greatly benefit the Anatomy and Physiology labs. Assistant professor of biology Dr. Natalia Omelchenko worked hard and applied for WVEPSCoR’s (West Virginia Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research) grant, which is sponsored through the National Science Foundation, in October.
