Hilltoppers clash with Rams in battle for first place

Eric Burkle’s red hot Hilltoppers will try to carry over the momentum from the Urbana sweep to this weekend’s Mountain East Conference match-up against Shepherd University. As of April 16, the baseball team is 14-15 overall and 12-8 in conference games this season with three big weekend series left in the season, and the games this weekend are scheduled for this Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., here on the hilltop. 

Toppers baseball needs big weekend against Urbana

This weekend, Eric Burkle’s 10-15 Hilltoppers will travel to Urbana to take on the Blue Knights in a four game series in Urbana, Ohio. The baseball team has gotten off to a rocky start to the season, but spirits are still high to get things going and turn the season around to make a push for a berth in the Mountain East Conference tournament in early May.

Toppers baseball set to play Notre Dame College (Ohio)

Head Coach Eric Burkle and his team take on a Mountain East Conference (MEC) north division opponent in a four game series. The Hilltoppers were originally set to play this series at home, but the locations and times have been changed. As of April 3, the games are scheduled to start at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. on Saturday and on Sunday they are scheduled to start at 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. The games have been moved to Wild Things Park in Washington, Pa.

Hilltoppers advance to Atlantic Region Tournament

The men’s basketball team will travel to Petersburg, Va. this weekend for their ninth straight NCAA Division II Tournament. The regional rankings came out this past Sunday night, and the Hilltoppers fell to the No. 4 seed in the tournament. 

Toppers baseball travels to N.C. for season opener

The Hilltopper baseball team will play their first games of the season this weekend against St. Augustine’s, Slippery Rock and Seton Hill University. The team was supposed to have their first games two weeks ago against St. Augustine’s, but due to weather, the series was postponed to today and their regularly scheduled games against two PSAC schools will be played as scheduled. 

Ethan Estes looks forward to final season at WLU

Coming into West Liberty University as a freshman, Ethan Estes was 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighed in at 170 pounds, and he had to make the transition from playing shortstop his whole life to moving across the diamond to play second base at the Division II level. The move from high school to college was more difficult than Estes expected, as he struggled through the team’s first ten games and was replaced at second base. However, that didn’t stop Estes’ drive and determination to get back out on the field. 

Places singles should avoid on Valentine’s Day

We all know that stress that comes around once a year when you look on the calendar and see that Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. Whether you’re single or in a relationship, Valentine’s Day is a headache. Being single on Valentine’s Day is difficult, because no matter where you go, you’ll be surrounded by couples and your feelings of jealousy and loneliness will creep into the back of your mind. 

McKenna Shives stands out on and off the court

A senior from Struthers, Ohio, McKenna Shives is no average basketball player. This is her second and final season here at West Liberty University. She transferred from Gannon University, where she played her first two collegiate seasons. In her junior year, she led the nation with 106 3-pointers and earned second team All-MEC honors

Toppers take on Fairmont in their 173rd meeting

The West Liberty University men’s basketball team will travel this weekend to Fairmont, W.Va. to take on the Fairmont State Fighting Falcons in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) match-up.
 
As of Jan. 21, the Hilltoppers are sporting a 17-0 overall record and a 12-0 record in conference games, and the Falcons have a 14-4 overall record and a 10-2 record in conference games, with their losses coming against West Virginia State and the Hilltoppers earlier in the season by a score of 100-106.

Three weeks ago, shocking news was announced on the West Liberty basketball Twitter account that senior point guard Brady Arnold had been diagnosed with an illness that will sideline him for the entire 2017-18 season.
