Howlett’s Hilltoppers gear up for MEC Tournament

After ending an incredible regular season on a low note with a home loss to rival Wheeling Jesuit, the West Liberty men’s basketball team is looking forward to postseason play, starting with the Mountain East Conference (MEC) Tournament in Charleston, W. Va. this week.

Senior transfer making the most of final year on the court

Senior guard Jordan Watson has been a vital part of the Hilltopper team this season. A transfer from Lincoln University (Pa.), Watson is shooting over 45 percent from behind the arc, the highest percentage on the team. However, there is so much more that lies beyond the player sporting the No. 1 jersey.

One of the seniors out on the court for the Running Hilltoppers this year is Brandon Smith. Originally from Sandusky, Ohio, Smith’s love for sports started at a young age. So young, in fact, his first word was “ball.”

The No. 5 West Liberty University men’s basketball team will take on West Virginia State tonight at 7:30 p.m., followed by University of Charleston on Saturday. With two wins this weekend, WLU will extend its current winning streak to four games.

McKenna Shives stands out on and off the court

A senior from Struthers, Ohio, McKenna Shives is no average basketball player. This is her second and final season here at West Liberty University. She transferred from Gannon University, where she played her first two collegiate seasons. In her junior year, she led the nation with 106 3-pointers and earned second team All-MEC honors

Alumnus scores touchdown with NFL cleat design

WLU alumnus Vinnie Candelore designed special cleats for Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Jesse James for the NFL’s “My Cause My Cleats” campaign.
 
Candelore, a freelance graphic designer and 2013 graduate, designed the custom cleats James wore on Dec. 4, 2017 when playing against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Toppers take on Fairmont in their 173rd meeting

The West Liberty University men’s basketball team will travel this weekend to Fairmont, W.Va. to take on the Fairmont State Fighting Falcons in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) match-up.
 
As of Jan. 21, the Hilltoppers are sporting a 17-0 overall record and a 12-0 record in conference games, and the Falcons have a 14-4 overall record and a 10-2 record in conference games, with their losses coming against West Virginia State and the Hilltoppers earlier in the season by a score of 100-106.

WLU basketball returns to hilltop after break

West Liberty University’s men’s and women’s basketball teams returned to the hilltop Saturday, Jan. 6, for their first home games of the year. Both squads pulled out a win, as our men’s team continues their perfect season and our Lady Toppers improve to 5-9.

Hilltoppers remain undefeated after late game scare

The West Liberty University men’s basketball avoided their first loss of the season after escaping a late comeback by the Fighting Falcons of Fairmont State. Our Hilltoppers pulled out a 106-100 victory, still preserving their perfect season on Saturday, Dec. 9 at the ASRC.
