Darius Bunch leads Hilltopper wrestling to regionals

The Hilltopper wrestling season is coming to a close with only two weeks remaining in the postseason. The regional tournament held at the University of Pittsburgh Johnstown has concluded and one wrestler, Darius Bunch, of the starting ten has advanced to the NCAA Division II national wrestling tournament in Iowa.

After a thrilling last-second road loss to Fairmont State, West Liberty men’s basketball team will look to rebound and maintain their top spot in the Mountain East Conference with a three-game homestand in the friendlier confines of the ASRC this week.

Toppers take on Fairmont in their 173rd meeting

The West Liberty University men’s basketball team will travel this weekend to Fairmont, W.Va. to take on the Fairmont State Fighting Falcons in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) match-up.
 
As of Jan. 21, the Hilltoppers are sporting a 17-0 overall record and a 12-0 record in conference games, and the Falcons have a 14-4 overall record and a 10-2 record in conference games, with their losses coming against West Virginia State and the Hilltoppers earlier in the season by a score of 100-106.

Nationally ranked wrestling team set to host invitational

Each year, West Liberty University hosts the West Virginia Invitational for wrestling. The NCAA Division II No. 16 Hilltoppers will come out looking for success on the mat.

Lady Toppers prepare to hit the hardwood for new season

The Lady Hilltoppers will see a notable change to its bench this upcoming season as Hall of Fame coach, Lynn Ullom, decided to step down as head coach after 26 seasons. However, with four returning starters and a stellar recruiting class, newly hired head coach, Kyle Cooper, is ready to preserve the program’s success.

Baseball, softball teams hold unique fundraiser

The West Liberty University baseball and softball teams have teamed up in a fundraising effort in hopes to get a new indoor facility. For just $20, you can purchase a raffle ticket that will enter into a drawing where the winner will win “Roberto,” a greyhound that races weekly at the Wheeling Island dog track. The drawing will be at halftime of the homecoming football game on Oct. 14, 2017. 

Toppers seek win against streaking Falcons

After a tough loss against the University of Virginia Wise last weekend, the West Liberty Hilltoppers are hoping to find a solid rhythm as they head into the middle of their season. After starting the season 2-2, the Toppers have struggled to maintain momentum toward a win streak. They hope to begin that streak tonight on the hilltop. 

Shepherd, Fairmont on this week’s volleyball schedule

After a tough start, the West Liberty women’s volleyball team earned a split at this past weekend’s MEC/PSAC Crossover at the ASRC, managing to knock off two Atlantic Region teams on their way to MEC conference play this weekend. 

Six obscure sporting events you didn’t know about

When you hear the word “sports,” events like baseball, golf, football, and even NASCAR come to mind. They’re the usual suspects found on ESPN because they are familiar. Well, there are plenty of additional “activities” that qualify as sports, and it’s very likely that you’ve never heard of them because they are just plain weird. We’re going far beyond makeshift playground activities as these six obscure sports have two things in common: randomness and an unexpected fan base.
