This spring semester has brought new beginnings to West Liberty University with a wide variety of campus initiatives that encourage students to be healthy, sustainable and to get more involved with the campus community. Whether students take up these new opportunities or not, the fact that they are being offered is something that the university should be congratulated on.

Why participate during class? That all depends

During the start of every semester, when professors hand out the syllabus for their class, there is usually a paragraph about attendance and participation points. Some professors decide to ignore it and only have homework and tests count for the final grade.

Others will take participation very seriously, making it worth ten percent or even 15 percent. But is there really any policy regarding participation?

SGA offers NYC trip for second year

This past week, West Liberty University’s Student Government Association (SGA) announced a red eye bus trip to New York City. The trip, open to students, staff and faculty, will leave campus on April 6 and return on April 8.

Every semester, students have the chance to get involved or begin new clubs and organizations on campus. This spring, students have the chance to join Equality Alliance, a student organization aimed at equality through educating people about the importance of tolerance and acceptance of minorities. 

WLU offers exciting study abroad programs for summer 2018

Studying abroad is a once in a lifetime opportunity. It provides a cultural knowledge of the world that you can’t get anywhere else, and it also expands your experience beyond the classroom. West Liberty University has been offering study abroad programs for a few years. Although they can be a bit pricey, students are encouraged to take on the adventure.

Kate Billings adds Title IX Coordinator to her resume

As of Jan. 2, Campus Activities Coordinator Kate Billings overtook the position of Title IX Coordinator.  
 
“Title IX prohibits discrimination based on sex and gender in education programs, including athletic programs or activities that receive federal funding,” Billings explained. “Under Title IX, schools must ensure that all students have equal access to education, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, or gender identity.”
