WLU senior running back Osman Kargbo is ambitious about winning another honor in five weeks until the end of this football season.
He ranked No. 7 nationally with 238 yards in combined kickoff and punt returns last month. In 2016, he was honored as the Mountain East Conference’s Special Team Player of the Week.
Kargbo had his position switched twice during his four-year college football lifetime. He was changed from running back to wide receiver during the time he was redshirted in his sophomore year. This spring, he was eventually switched back to running back.
“Osman was a record-setting running back in high school,” Head Football Coach Roger Waialae said in an interview with Hilltoppersports.com, “With his speed and playmaking ability, he’s a great change of pace back for us.”
Kargbo himself prefers being a running back in the event of getting more chances to get the ball.
“Running back is a better fit for me,” said Kargbo. “I graduated high school as a running back. I just think it’s the best position in football, because you get the most opportunities to catch the ball.”
Football is not the only thing in Kargbo’s life. His music talent brought WLU a brilliant DJ. Last year he was an invited guest DJ in G-Top, the old restaurant pub near campus, to celebrate the WLU men’s basketball team win over Wheeling Jesuit University.
Kargbo also DJs at the Edge Bar & Grill in Wheeling every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night.
Traveling is another important element to Kargbo. He enjoyed his trip to Germany this recent summer. Now, he plans for his next destination to be any Spanish-speaking country.
“I like traveling, I went to Germany this summer, I want to go somewhere to speak Spanish,” said Kargbo.
“It was just nice. It was a good game,” said Kargbo. “They were ranked nationally, and we were the underdog, so we beat them. I had the catch that set up the game winning field goal, then Christian Morris made it to give us the victory.”
Being competitive on the field and easy-going off the field, Kargbo wins the respect from teammates and friends.
“He is competitive, energetic and fast. He is the player that you can put him anywhere on the field. He is a fun dude to be around, he likes to make people laugh. At the same time, he is serious when he comes to people, takes the game seriously, does the right thing,” said senior Michael McLean, Kargbo’s teammate and roommate.
