Last year, Housing and Student Life took control of Intramural Sports along with fitness classes and open gym hours. Each month, there is a weekly event planned along with one or two stand-alone event nights. This October, Housing and Student Life will be holding flag football at The West Family Stadium on Mondays and Wednesdays, and a pool tournament on Oct. 6.
In the union this week, look for the Intramural Student Rep., who will be handing out flyers and helping students sign up for events. You can register your team online, in the union or by emailing Kate Billings.
If flag football and pool isn’t your thing, campus is also offering Monday night Zumba classes in the Dance Studio of Blatnik.
Soon, instructor Meredith Garner will be starting a second class. She said, “I’m excited about being able to combine dance and fitness to teach students here. I taught Zumba classes all summer and had a blast, so I’m really looking forward to just having fun and allowing people to feel great about themselves.”
Aside from Intramurals, Housing and Student Life are planning to have open gym hours in Blatnik seven days a week. Currently on Tuesdays from 3-6 p.m. and Thursdays from 7-10 p.m., students can sign out intramural equipment like basketballs, volleyballs, hockey nets, etc. to use for activities of their own.
With involvement rising each semester, Kate Billings is excited to see what happens throughout the year with Intramurals and open gym hours.
“What’s great is the voice of the students coming to the office asking for equipment and sharing ideas for classes and events,” Billings said. With more demand, more funding will come which will help support programs and keeping everyone active on campus.
