September is here, which means so is fall recruitment on the Hilltop. Recruitment week is the time when potential new members can get an inside look at all the Greek Life organizations this campus has to offer. This year, recruitment falls on Sept. 6-9.
One of the biggest groups on campus is Greek Life. WLU is home to five sororities: Alpha Xi Delta, Beta Rho Epsilon, Delta Theta Kappa, Lambda Psi Sigma, and Chi Omega. Also, we are soon-to be-home to five fraternities; Beta Theta Gamma, Chi Nu, Theta Xi, Kappa Delta Kappa, and Phi Delta Theta. Greek Life is a close knit group that strives to make not only the West Liberty campus but also the community better.
There are multiple benefits that come along with joining Greek Life. Allie Hamilton, a member of Beta Rho Epsilon, said, “I would encourage others to go Greek because I met so many people that I never would have talked to.”
Going Greek can also mean making life-long friends. Lauren Altobell, a member of Alpha Xi Delta, said one of the benefits of her organization include “the bonds that we share and also the opportunities that come from our sorority.”
Every Greek organization is required to have a philanthropy, which they fundraise for throughout the semester. The philanthropies on campus range from Make-A-Wish to the ASPCA.
“My favorite thing about Lambda is our philanthropy,” Maddy Blackwell, a member of Lambda Psi Sigma, said. “When I was younger, I wanted to be a vet, so helping at local shelters and donating to the ASPCA is the next best thing.”
Recruitment week can also bring nervousness along with it. Devante Brown, a member of
Getting involved on campus is an important part of your college experience, whether it’s Greek Life or not. Some of the best memories for Casey Johnson, a member of Kappa Delta Kappa, have come from his fraternity.
“Winning Greek Week with my brothers is something that I will always look back on and cherish from my college time,” Johnson said.
