Parties are most likely the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Greek Life. Though you may think that is all they do, fraternities and sororities do not get the credit they deserve. At West Liberty University, every Greek Life organization completes philanthropy and community services throughout the year.
For example, Beta Theta, a local fraternity on campus, volunteers at the soup kitchen every semester. Also, Chi Omega, a national sorority on campus, works with the Make-A-Wish Foundation. This is only a small glimpse of how our Greek Life organizations are making a difference in the West Liberty and Wheeling community.
Phi Delta Theta, a national fraternity on campus, recently completed a community service event. The members of the fraternity visited Madison Elementary School, located on Wheeling Island. There, the members played educational games with the children and also, had lunch with them.
This experience not only impacted the students, but also the members of Phi Delta Theta. Brandon Galici, the President of Phi Delta Theta WV Gamma, enjoyed his experience with the students. “Knowing that we’re able to make a difference in the kids’ lives is a feeling that we’ll all remember forever,” said Galici.
For some members, this was a chance to be a big brother. “It was like hanging out with the little brother that I never had,” said Jake, a member of Phi Delta Theta. Some of these kids do not have father figures in their lives, and it is remarkable to see one of the many WLU Greek Life organizations fill that void.
Delta Theta Kappa, a local sorority at WLU, visits the Ronald McDonald House every semester. Bri Mason, the New Member Educator of Delta Theta Kappa, was delighted to give back to these families. “It is very rewarding to cook a decent home-cooked meal for families who are in a crisis at the moment, and to see the looks on their faces makes it very rewarding,” said Mason.
Giving back to people less fortunate than us is a great deed, but what our WLU Greek Life organizations take away from these experiences will stay with them forever. These opportunities that our young men and women have encountered will also cause them to have a greater appreciation for others. WLU fraternities and sororities host many philanthropy and community events throughout the semester. If you are interested in cooperating with or joining Greek Life, please visit their site.
