The West Liberty Hilltoppers come back after losing the entire game to defeat West Virginia State 42-36. The Hilltoppers ended their season with a record of 5-6. In the conference they went 5-5. West Virginia State’s season ends at 5-6 as well. 13 seniors will say goodbye as they played their last game ever as a Hilltopper.
The Hilltopper offense accounted for 453 yards in the game. Quarterback Dakota Conwell went 14 of 24 for 280 yards, five touchdown passes, and one interception. Conwell also led the team in rushing carrying the ball 23 times for 134 yards and one touchdown. Wide receiver Anton McCallum had four catches for 151 yards and two touchdowns. Senior tight end Daree’ Goodwin finished his college career with four catches for 42 yards and two touchdowns. Wide receiver Max Kapron finished the day with a touchdown pass.
West Liberty’s defense gave up 36 points on 471 yards of West Virginia State offense. Linebacker Garrett Vulcano led the team in tackles with 14. Andrew Faraimo and Jerimy Mask both finished the day with 11 tackles.
West Virginia State quarterback Matt Kinnick went 25 of 47 for 353 yards and one touchdown. Kinnick also rushed nine times for 26 yards. Dionta Brown led the team in rushing on ten carries for 39 yards. Running back Tyrone Barber carried the ball 15 times for 35 yards and one touchdown. Wide receiver Quinton Gray led the team in receiving yards with 161 yards on eight catches and one touchdown.
The Yellow Jacket defense didn’t really show up to play letting up 42 points. Linebacker Dennis Gardeck led the team in tackles with nine. Cornerback Ayinde Warren had the lone interception on Dakota Conwell.
Quarterback Dakota Conwell said, “My season expectations for next year are to work hard this offseason so we can have a winning team next year”
