The West Liberty Hilltoppers fell short to the University of Charleston Golden Eagles by a score of 42-37. The Hilltoppers fall to 3-3, as Charleston advances to 5-1. The Hilltoppers just could not overcome the hot Golden Eagle offense in today’s game.
West Liberty combined for a monster day on offense having a total of 515 yards. Quarterback Dakota Conwell went 19-32 for 399 yards, four touchdown passes, and two interceptions. Running back Jeremiah Ortiz led the team in rushing with 14 carries for 75 yards. Conwell also ran the ball ten times for 28 yards and a touchdown. Wide receivers Anton McCallum and Daree’ Goodwin were the two primary go to guys in the game. McCallum caught seven passes for 181 yards and three touchdowns, while Goodwin caught six passes for 155 yards and one touchdown.
The Hilltopper defense allowed 449 yards of Golden Eagle offense. West Liberty could not stop the run game at all today. West Liberty linebacker Andrew Faraimo led the team in tackles with 15. Cornerback Terrance Baldwin didn’t have a bad day either, he combined for 10 total tackles. Head Coach Roger Waialae said, “ I like the way we fought today, we never gave up. We just couldn’t overcome the deficit to get the win today.”
The Golden Eagle offense was hard to stop for the Hilltopper defense. Quarterback Jeremy Johnson went 17-28 for 217 yards and one touchdown pass. Johnson also led the team in rushing with 19 carries for 107 yards and one touchdown. Running back Tevion Cappe was also in the mix with 19 carries for 71 yards and one touchdown. D’Andre Brooks and Joey Augustin led the team in receiving today. Brooks had five receptions for 80 yards, while Augustin caught 5 receptions for 73 yards and one touchdown.
The Golden Eagle defense could not stop West Liberty’s offense either, but they somehow still got the win. Rhakeem Stallings led the team in tackles with nine and interception. Kevin Clemens was the second leading tackler with six.
West Liberty will travel to UVA-Wise next Saturday afternoon. Kick-off is set for 1 P.M.
