The West Liberty Hilltoppers took on number nine Concord University at West Family Stadium Saturday afternoon and won by a score of 29-28. The final score of the game came down to a 32 yard field goal from freshman Christian Morris, and he kicked the ball right through the uprights to give the Toppers a 29-28 lead with :16 seconds remaining in the game. The end of the game was put on West Liberty’s defense and they held Concord to win the game.
West Liberty played really well against number nine Concord. West Liberty quarterback Dakota Conwell went 30-53, throwing for 288 yards and one touchdown pass. He did throw three interceptions, but he still lead his team to victory. Tight end Daree Goodwin accounted for 111 of Conwell’s passing yards with nine receptions and one touchdown. The Hilltoppers’ receiving corps will be good for the next three years. Red-shirt freshman Ian Kelly had seven receptions for 65 yards, sophomore Anton McCallum had four receptions for 35 yards, and red-shirt freshman Micah Lowe had four receptions for 35 yards.
The running game for West Liberty was pretty solid as sophomore Jeremiah Ortiz and junior Ty Peterson both split time at the running back position today. Ortiz carried the ball 19 times for 63 yards with one touchdown and Peterson carried the ball 13 times for 55 yards. Quarterback Dakota Conwell also carried the ball nine times for 34 yards.
West Liberty had a total offense of 454 yards against Concord.
Defensively, West Liberty stood their ground and got the job done today against Concord. They allowed 346 total yards against them, but they made clutch plays at the right time. Sophomore wide safety Cordell Felder led the team in tackles with eight total. The defensive line accounted for two sacks on the day, one from Quentin Sifford and one from Jevon Fripp. The Hilltopper defense picked off three passes today from quarterback Brian Novak. On the interceptions were, Charles Simmons, Charles Thigpen, and Miles Young.
For Concord, quarterback Brian Novak went 23-32 for 262 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions. He focused primarily on one wide receiver, TJ Smith. Smith had eight receptions for 96 yards. 2014 MEC Offensive Player of the Year Calvinaugh Jones carried the ball 10 times for 74 yards and one touchdown. Defensively, linebacker Cade Rogers led the team in tackles with 11 total. Concord accounted two sacks from nose-tackle Kevin Pierre and linebacker Austin Dotson. Concord also accounted for three interceptions from Akil Borderlon, Chaudlier Shepherd, and Brandon Martinez.
West Liberty will play next Saturday at West Family Stadium against McKendree. Kickoff is set for 1 P.M.
