Jasmine Joseph, Bryce Laspisa, and Hannah E. Graham. These are just a few college students who are now missing. Graham is more recent than the others and went missing Sept. 13 from Charlottesville, Va. She is 18 years old and was in her second year at the University of Virginia.
According to the article Find Hannah: Suspect Captured, But Hannah Graham Still Missing although a suspect has been captured Grahamʼs location is unknown.
It continued with, “This case is nowhere near over,” said Charlottesville Police Chief Tim Longo at a news conference last week.
“We have a person in custody, but there’s a long road ahead of us and that long road includes finding Hannah Graham.”
West Liberty does not have a large abduction or missing personʼs issue due to the size of our student body.
Emergency buttons in the parking lots and having police on the clock 24 hours a day have also assisted in the prevention of anything life endangering on campus.
Even though West Liberty is one of the safest universities in the country, that doesnʼt mean that is not susceptible to danger.
In West Liberty and Ohio County there were over 100 aggravated assault charges filed and over 40 burglary charges on record in 2010.
The article America’s Missing goes into detail saying, “Reports of missing persons have increased six fold in the past 25 years, from roughly 150,000 in 1980 to about 900,000 this year.”
The article continued by saying, “The increase was driven in part by the country’s growing population, but the numbers also indicate that law enforcement treats the cases more seriously now, including those of marginalized citizens. An astounding 2,300 Americans are reported missing every day, including both adults and children.”
It also detailed that, “the federal government counted 840,279 missing persons cases in 2001. All but about 50,000 were juveniles, classified as anyone younger than 18.”
West Liberty has a set of safety guidelines that were recently emailed to students.
