Passing the Torch: West Liberty University Theatre Welcomes Christopher Rees, Honoring Meta Lasch’s Legacy

August 20, 2025 By Michael A

West Liberty, W.V. – A new chapter begins for the West Liberty University Theatre Program as Christopher Rees steps into the role of Design/Tech/Management (DTM) faculty, carrying forward the remarkable legacy of his former professor and mentor, Meta Lasch.

For more than 40 years, Meta Lasch stood at the helm of the Hilltop Players’ technical and design work, shaping the look, feel, and spirit of the program. Her artistry transformed the stage into worlds of imagination, while her mentorship shaped generations of theatre professionals who now work across the nation. “No one person has done more for the West Liberty University Theatre Program than Meta Lasch,” says Dr. Matthew Harder, Chair of the Department of Music & Theater.

Lasch’s retirement marks not an end, but a handoff — one made even more meaningful because the torch is being passed to one of her own students. “Meta’s legacy lives on in our wonderful Theater program and her protégé Professor Rees.” Says Harder. A proud West Liberty graduate, Rees brings a portfolio rich with scenic, lighting, and technical design, as well as production management experience in theatre, live events, and education. Known for his ability to merge creative vision with technical precision, Rees is poised to lead the program into a new era. More about his work can be found at www.creessd.com.

“We are thrilled to welcome Christopher back to the Hilltop,” says Professor Michael Aulick, Director of Theatre. “His return is more than a hire — it’s a homecoming. Chris understands the traditions that make the Hilltop Players unique, and he has the skills and imagination to build on that foundation in bold, exciting ways.”

The Hilltop Players will now benefit from the perfect balance of continuity and innovation: Lasch’s influence will remain woven into the fabric of the program, while Rees introduces fresh techniques, emerging technologies, and collaborative practices to prepare students for today’s performing arts industry.

Reflecting on his new role, Rees shared, “It’s an incredible honor to return to the place where I first discovered my passion for theatre design. I am deeply grateful for everything Meta taught me, and I’m excited to help the next generation of students find their voices, just as she helped me find mine.”

With the torch officially passed, West Liberty University looks forward to a seamless blend of tradition and transformation — a Hilltop stage where excellence is both remembered and reimagined.
