Education

Background

Dr. Howard Shackelford practices general surgery, vascular surgery, and cardiothoracic surgery in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Wheeling, West Virginia, and St. Clairsville, Ohio. He graduated with a MD 34 years ago and is an alumnus of West Liberty University. In addition to practicing medicine, Dr. Shackelford has been an advocate for PA practice and education, and PAs are part of his team. He sits on the Advisory Board for the College of Sciences, the Advisory Committee for the Physician Assistant program development, and has been a member of the Board of Governors for West Liberty University. He was instrumental in initiating the PA program development at West Liberty University. Dr. Shackelford has also been a Clinical Professor for other PA programs in the region and a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery for West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine.

Dr. Shackelford works closely with colleagues in Family Practice, Primary Care, Pediatrics, Women’s Health, Behavioral Sciences, the surgical specialties, and other areas of medicine to ensure that the education provided to PA students at West Liberty University meets current clinical practice standards and scope. In addition to his duties as the Medical Director, Dr. Shackelford will also present topics in specialty areas of clinical medicine.
