WLU Students Mark Constitution Day with Debate

Share

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., Sept. 22, 2021 — West Liberty University observed Constitution Day (Sept. 17) with a spirited debate on civil liberties held at noon today.

“The students selected the debate topic dealing with vaccine mandates and our program is available in person or via Zoom,” said Dr. Brian Fitzpatrick, assistant professor of Political Science. Fitzpatrick will moderate the discussion.

Two teams of WLU students in his Political Science classes will debate the resolution:  “Vaccine mandates do not violate civil liberty protections in the United States Constitution.”

The debate takes place in the College Union for those who attend in person.

Commemorating the signing of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787, Constitution Day became an official holiday in 2004, with the help of West Virginia Senator Robert C. Byrd (1917 – 2010).

Professor Fitzpatrick is being assisted in this effort by students in his American Government Class.

WLU offers programs in social studies with concentrations in geography and planning and history and social studies education, all housed in its College of Liberal Arts.

The College of Liberal and Creative Arts led by Dean Cecilia Konchar Farr, includes undergraduate programs in criminal justice, English, geography and planning, history, philosophy, political science, pre-law, religion, social work, sociology, and world languages. Additionally, the College of Liberal and Creative Arts offers a graduate program in criminology.
