WLU Foundation Board Includes New Members, Officers

Two new members have been appointed to the West Liberty University Foundation, Inc., Louis P. Cardamone and Dr. Daniel I. Joseph.

Cardamone is a 1965 graduate of West Liberty. Prior to that he served in the U.S. Army and attended New Mexico Highlands University for one year. He earned a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in education, was a member of the Chi Nu Fraternity and was a starting player on the Hilltopper football team.

He was then awarded a fellowship to West Virginia University where he earned a master’s degree in 1969. Cardamone’s professional career as an educator included serving as a teacher, coach, guidance counselor and administrator.

Cardamone served three public districts in the state of Ohio for 15 years as superintendent of schools. He retired as Superintendent of Warren City Schools in Warren, Ohio in 1994. Cardamone then spent two years with the United States Department of Defense before fully retiring in 1996.

His wife, Darlene (Goff) Cardamone ‘61, is also a West Liberty graduate earning an associate’s degree in dental hygiene. The Cardamones have endowed a scholarship in memory of their son Gregory L. Cardamone, a 1987 alumnus of West Liberty. The Cardamones are residents of Ocala, Fla.

Dr. Daniel Joseph is a 1975 graduate of West Liberty, earning a Bachelor’s of Science degree. He continued his education, earning a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from West Virginia University and a Master’s of Science in orthodontics from Washington University, St. Louis, Mo.

He established his orthodontic practice in Wheeling in 1980. Joseph has served as president of the Wheeling District Dental Society and the West Virginia Orthodontic Association and as president and treasurer of the West Virginia Dental Association. Joseph also spent many years as a member of the American Dental Association House of Delegates and as a member of the American Association of Orthodontists.

After serving for many years on the board of directors of the Southern Association of Orthodontists, Joseph was presented the organization’s highest award, the SAO Citizenship Award and the Oren A. Oliver Distinguished Service Award. Joseph also was awarded diplomat status in two prestigious dental organizations, the International College of Dentists and the American College of Dentists.

Joseph has served on the WLU Science Advisory Board and the board of the Regional Science and Engineering Fair. He also has helped to secure funding for the WLU dental hygiene clinic. He and his wife, Debbie (Vanyo) Joseph ‘75, also a graduate of West Liberty, are the founders of the annual Wheeling Vintage Raceboat Regatta. They are residents of Wheeling.

The new members join a board led by a newly installed slate of officers including Chairman Leslie “Les” P. DeFelice, Vice Chair Christine Carder, Secretary Richard Lucas and Treasurer E. Marc Abraham.

DeFelice graduated from West Liberty State College with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in business administration in 1976. He is the owner of DeFeliceCare and Visiting Angels. Besides serving as chair of the WLU Foundation, he is a member of the Investment Committee and is chair of the executive committee for the WLU Small and Family Business Program. He is a 2005 recipient of The State Journal’s Who’s Who in West Virginia Business Award and a resident of Dillonvale, Ohio.

Carder, a 1972 alumna, is a former Ohio County educator and served as principal at Wheeling Park High School. She resides in Wheeling.

Lucas, a 1986 alumnus, is the chief executive office for Main Street Bank and resides in Wheeling.

Abraham, a 1979 alumnus, is the owner of Abraham and Company, LLC and resides in Glen Dale, W.Va.
