WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. — West Liberty University received a $10,000 LEDA (Local Economic Development Assistance) grant to improve campus sidewalks and ensure a safer walking area for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Key areas of campus, including the sidewalks near Boyd Hall and Shaw Hall, will be supported by the funding.
Del. Jimmy Willis, R-West Virginia, presented the check to the University. Willis said that the funding will support improvements made to campus and address any areas where sidewalk repairs are needed.
Willis said, “This is the oldest public institution in the state of West Virginia of higher learning, so it’s been here for a while, so it needs a little upgrade once in a while. And I was happy to do it, not just as their delegate, but as a citizen who has had generations of my family come here.”
WLU President Dr. Tim Borchers stated that recent winters contributed to the deterioration of a lot of the campus walkways.
“The improvements to the sidewalks will help with the wear caused by the winter weather while also providing a safer environment for everyone on campus,” he said. “We are thankful to the state and Delegate Willis for their support of our campus infrastructure.”
The West Virginia LEDA grant is state funding allocated by members of the West Virginia Legislature to support local community projects, infrastructure, public safety, and small business initiatives.
