WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. — West Liberty University is now the only university in West Virginia offering a standalone bachelor’s degree program that leads to state certification in both Preschool-Kindergarten General Education and Birth-PreK Special Education. This certification area represents a critical workforce need across West Virginia and throughout the nation.
The Inclusive Early Childhood Education program prepares graduates to work in a variety of educational and community-based settings. Students are prepared to teach in inclusive preschool and kindergarten classrooms, serve as developmental specialists within early intervention programs, and support young children and families in other educational settings, including childcare centers and community-based programs. This broad preparation allows graduates to meet the diverse developmental and educational needs of young children from birth through kindergarten.
“West Liberty University is proud to continue offering the Inclusive Early Childhood Education major and certification in an area of critical need for our state,” said Dr. Hilary Bougher-Muckian, Associate Professor of Inclusive Early Childhood Education. “As demand for highly qualified early childhood special educators continues to grow, we remain committed to preparing the next generation of professionals who will serve young children and families through inclusive educational practices.”
The Inclusive Early Childhood Education program has experienced a 75 percent increase in enrollment from the 2025-2026 academic year to the 2026-2027 academic year. Currently, several courses are available online, and the program is expected to be offered fully online no later than fall 2028, increasing access and flexibility for future educators across the state and region.
West Liberty University blends a small-town environment with a comprehensive college experience, fostering students’ aspirations through hands-on learning, personalized support, and unique academic programs at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
