WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. — West Liberty University Mental Health Counselor Madeline Boyd recently provided a training for art teachers at Wheeling Park High School focused on art therapy, emotional regulation, and ways educators can incorporate art-based techniques into the classroom.
Boyd presented the training on Aug. 25, providing educators with an introduction to art therapy, how it can support students, and how simple art activities can be used in classroom settings to promote emotional regulation.
“Art can provide another way to communicate,” said Boyd. “The process is more important than the product, and teachers aren’t expected to fix everything.”
During the training, Boyd shared several art activities that teachers can use with students to encourage regulation and self-expression. She also discussed the distinct roles of classroom teachers and professional art therapists, emphasizing that educators can provide supportive experiences while recognizing when a student may need professional mental health support.
The presentation provided teachers with resources they can use when they believe a student would benefit from additional professional assistance.
Through outreach opportunities such as the training at Wheeling Park High School, West Liberty University faculty and staff share their expertise with educators and community partners throughout the region while supporting student well-being and mental health awareness.
