West Liberty University Celebrates Homecoming 2023

West Liberty, WV – September 25, 2023 – West Liberty University recently came alive with the spirit of unity and celebration as the Hilltoppers took on UNC Pembroke during the 2023 Homecoming weekend. The festivities were marked by heartfelt tributes, alumni recognition, and a profound sense of community.

On Saturday morning, September 23, witnessed the prestigious Wall of Honor breakfast ceremony at the Elbin Library on West Liberty University’s campus. The Alumni Wall of Honor Award is the highest honor the Alumni Association bestows upon a West Liberty University graduate. It is a tribute to alumni who have excelled in their chosen careers, displayed selfless dedication to society, and exhibited unwavering loyalty to their alma mater. This year’s honorees, Patricia Gracey (Class of 1963); John Dolan (Class of 1978); the late Bettie Steele (Class of 1984); John Blangor (Class of 1987); and Stephanie Shaw (Class of 1997), exemplify greatness in every sense. The event, hosted by Director of Alumni Affairs, Amanda Bennett, was graced by the insightful words of President, Dr. Tim Borchers.

“I can’t thank our alumni enough for showing up at homecoming and returning home to the Hilltop. And to our Wall of Honor recipients, they’ve not just set an example; they’re the living embodiment of our university’s spirit. I thank each and every one of them for proudly representing us and achieving great things!”, says Amanda Bennett, Director of Alumni Affairs, “Their dedication and achievements inspire us all, and we are immensely proud to call them alumni of our university.”

Saturday unfolded as alumni from across the nation gathered to rejoice, reminisce, and reconnect with the Hilltop. A Family Fest welcomed numerous vendors and participation from various colleges within West Liberty University, adding to the festive atmosphere.

During halftime, the Wall of Honor nominees were honored at the 50-yard line, joined by Amanda Bennett and Dr. Tim Borchers. In a touching moment, the 50th-anniversary West Liberty State College Homecoming Queen, Mary Fran Kowalo, had the privilege of crowning the 2023 Homecoming Queen. Congratulations were in order for Beta Hall Director, Emily Rudy, and former RA, Haden Derrow, who were crowned the 2023 Homecoming King and Queen.

In a solemn and heartfelt tribute, the West Liberty University community also took a moment to honor and recognize the late Gary West, who recently passed away. Gary was a genuinely remarkable individual whose legacy will forever live on the Hilltop, a testament to his enduring impact on the WLU community.

West Liberty University extends its gratitude to all participants, honorees, and supporters who made the 2023 Homecoming a memorable and heartwarming celebration of unity and achievement.
