WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., Jan. 22, 2022 – The West Liberty University’s Office of Graduate Studies and the College of Education and Human Performance will be hosting a virtual open house for its new Master of Science in Athletic Training graduate program on Tuesday, Jan. 25 at 2 p.m.

Dr. David Hanna

“The new master’s degree program begins in the fall 2022 and now is the perfect time to learn more about our professional degree,” said Dr. David Hanna, WLU program director and professor. “This safe, virtual open house is a great way to explore our new program and ask questions to help you build your future.”

In a one-hour session, Dr. David Hanna and Assistant Professor Dr. Meleesa Wohleber will provide an overview of the brand-new master’s program at WLU, giving more details on admissions requirements, coursework along with general information on the field of athletic training.

Certified athletic trainers are health care professionals who specialize in preventing, recognizing, managing and rehabilitating injuries that result from physical activity. As part of a complete health-care team, the certified athletic trainer works under the direction of a licensed physician and in cooperation with other health care professionals, athletics administrators, coaches and parents.

Interested students will be able to register in advance by clicking this link: https://westliberty.secure.force.com/events#/esr?eid=a124z000007SizCAAS.

The Athletic Training Program is housed in WLU’s College of Education and Human Performance.

Dr. Hanna has been with WLU since 2012 and was instrumental in the growth and development of the program. Dr. Wohleber joined the university in 2017 and has experience both as faculty and a working athletic trainer in the university setting and for the military.

The undergraduate degree program was established in 2012 and is now transitioning into a master’s level in fall of 2022, as mandated by its accrediting body, the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). After 2026, athletic training majors will no longer be offered as an undergraduate program (bachelor’s) and only as a graduate program degree (master’s) for all institutions across the country who complete the transition process

WLU’s program seeks to graduate students that demonstrate effective communication and ethical decision making while always considering patient‐centered values.

As a member of the NCAA and MEC, WLU offers a wide range of intercollegiate athletics at the NCAA Division II level, including men’s football, cross country, basketball, wrestling, track, tennis, baseball, soccer and golf along with women’s softball, volleyball, cross country, basketball, track, tennis, golf, soccer and acrobatics and tumbling, giving its athletic training students a chance to experience hands-on training.
