WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., Oct. 6, 2019 — Youth alcohol abuse is a topic of concern for communities everywhere and West Liberty University will host a town hall presentation called “Communities Talk About Underage Drinking” at 3 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 9, to address substance abuse.
Graduate Assistant Michelle Yadrick, who is enrolled in the Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology program, is coordinating the hour-long program that will take place in College Hall. It is sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
“We are grateful for the grant that is funding this program provided by SAMHSA,” said Yadrick.
“It is essential to discuss the topic of underage drinking on college campuses. We have all heard the risks of death, physical and sexual assault, and binge drinking, though sometimes it is difficult for students to recognize how that risk applies to them or their friends, personally.”
Guest speakers from Wheeling’s Youth Service Systems will present and share information on both local activities to do in place of drinking and substance-related services.
Prevention and recovery methods from substance abuse and alcohol issues will be shared and questions answered, Yadrick noted.
Yadrick is from Weirton, W.Va. and plans to make her career as a clinical psychologist. She earned her undergraduate degree in psychology at WLU, graduating in spring 2018. She began the master’s program this fall, the first term it has been available.
