WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., April 5, 2023 — West Liberty University’s theater production of “Peter and The Starcatcher” received two national awards from the Kennedy Center recently, the Distinguished Performance Ensemble and Distinguished Performance by an Actor (Joel Nau) awards.

“Peter and the Starcatcher” took two national honors at the Kennedy Center American Theater Festival for Region 2.

Taking part as an invited Region 2 production, the honors are a result of the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF), a national theater program involving 18,000 students annually from colleges and universities across the country.

“These latest national honors truly illustrate the consistency of our success as a program and I congratulate all the talented students and excellent faculty who worked on the play,” said WLU Theater Director Michael Aulick.

“This is the third time one of our productions has been invited to the festival and then received additional recognitions at the regional and national levels. We couldn’t be prouder,” he added.

“Peter and the Starcatcher” upends the century-old story of how a miserable orphan comes to be Peter Pan. A prequel to the classic tale of “Peter Pan,” the action begins like a journey and quickly becomes a thrilling adventure.

A wildly theatrical adaptation of Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson’s best-selling novels, the play was conceived for the stage by directors, Roger Rees and Alex Timbers, and written by Rick Elice, with music by Wayne Barker.

It was produced at Kelly Theater in December 2022.

“I congratulate our students and theater director Michael Aulick on this honor. West Liberty University has an outstanding theater program that continues its long tradition of excellence here on the Hilltop. I’m so proud of the big things they do with a small program!” said Dr. Cecilia Konchar Farr, dean of the College of Liberal and Creative Arts.

The play includes 19 students in the cast and crew, not to mention additional students working in shops and backstage work.

“I’m very honored to be recognized nationally for distinguished acting performance. This show was very special to me and everyone who was a part of it. I am very proud of both myself, and also the many members of the cast who took up huge responsibilities behind the scenes. My stage fighting, sword combat, singing, dancing, dialect, and choreography certainly wouldn’t have been very ‘distinguished’ without them all coaching me. Thank you all, and I look forward to bigger and better projects in the future,” said Joel Nau who played the part of Blackstache in the production, a character that goes on to become Captain Hook.

Nau is from Wheeling and is a junior in his first year at West Liberty, as he transferred from WVU last year. He is studying Math Education for his bachelor’s degree, but hoping to pursue acting at a professional level upon graduation.
