WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., Aug. 20, 2019 – West Liberty University students begin moving in this week on the Hilltop as the 2019 – 2020 academic year begins.

“This year we are pleased to say that we expect more students to reside in campus housing. We are looking forward to helping our students move-in and get comfortable,” said Marcella Snyder who is the executive director of Housing and Student Life in the department of Enrollment Services.

Student moves into her dorm during Fall 2018 move-in days.

Snyder, working with Area Coordinators Katlynn Talkington and Camille Irvin, together oversee the 56 residence assistants and hall directors and graduate assistants who assist students with life as a college student, providing help with questions or in times of crisis.

Snyder is expecting about 1,175 resident students this fall, which is a 6 percent increase of resident students from last fall. She also states that more WLU dorms feature private rooms, making for a better student experience.

“This fall, Beta Hall joined Curtis, Boyd and Rogers as a designated single residence hall which makes students happy,” she said. “We want our students to enjoy living on campus and we are all here to help them have the best college educational experience possible.”

Honors College students check-in on Thursday and get settled. An academic program of distinction for motivated, high-achieving students, these students reside in Bonar and Krise halls.

New or first-time students move-in on Friday, Aug. 23, and returning students settle in on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 25.

Classes begin at the Highlands Center campus on Aug. 24, which is having a 10-year celebration that day, and on the main campus on Aug. 26.

Campus improvements are ongoing and include new air conditioning in Arnett Hall, maintenance of dorms and sidewalks, and paving of roads and parking lots.

Opening soon will be the newly built Topper Village, located near the main gate to campus, just across Rt. 88. Topper Village offers two-bedroom apartments, complete with two private bathrooms, shared living room and kitchen space. These apartments are furnished with kitchen appliances and bedroom furniture. Students have already filled two of the apartment buildings and a third building will be constructed in the near future.

Athletes can look forward to the completion of the new turf at the West Family Stadium. Also coming soon will be the opening of the West Family Athletic Complex (track and soccer field complex).

Housing and Student Life staff coordinates all Topper Fest activities, which get started Friday and include three weeks of informative and entertaining events designed to help students learn about campus, make friends and enjoy life on the Hilltop.

Topper Fest opens with a family Welcome Picnic from 11 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., Friday in the Marketplace cafeteria, located in Rogers Hall. Many other fun and educational activities are planned and to see a complete list please click here.
