“Five of our athletic training students and several staff members went with me to visit Charleston and lobby for the profession of athletic training. WLU joined several other schools from across the state in our efforts,” Hanna said.

The lobby effort was coordinated by West Virginia University athletic training department, according to Hanna. Other WLU professors and staff who attended include: Hannah Harnar, Jerry Duncan, Herb Minch and Amber Helphenstine. Students who attended are:  Samantha Cook, Michaela Hawkins, Kayla Henderson, Leanna McMillen, and Amy Webster.

“Our students learned a lot. They talked to delegates and senators. They advocated for their profession and met other students from other programs in the state. We also sat in on a chamber session. Overall it was a great educational experience,” Hanna said.

Athletic training is a growing degree program that is relatively new at West Liberty University, having begun in 2012. Students prepare for careers in athletic training that will take them to jobs in sports, education, clinics and other health care settings.

Certified athletic trainers are health care professionals who specialize in preventing, recognizing, managing and rehabilitating injuries that result from physical activity. As part of a complete health-care team, the certified athletic trainer works under the direction of a licensed physician and in cooperation with other health care professionals, athletics administrators, coaches and parents.

Hanna has degrees in athletic training as well as a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree. For more information, please contact Hanna at 304-336-8547 or visit westliberty.edu.
