WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., March 29, 2023 — Every spring, West Liberty University’s College of Sciences creates a visiting student event that introduces young people to the science programs and classes taught on the Hilltop.

“We are looking forward to welcoming the high school students to our campus and sharing the fun of science with them,” said Diana Barber, who is an assistant professor of biology in the Department of Organismal Biology, Ecology and Zoo Science.

Nursing is one of the departments that welcome high school students to class during SciFi.

The visiting group includes about 100 students from Weir and John Marshall high schools, plus a few homeschooled students.

Referred to as SciFi or Science Classes I find Interesting, SciFi takes place from 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., Thursday, March 30 in Arnett Hall, College Hall and Campbell Hall of Health Sciences. Lunch in the Bear’s Den follows the classroom experience.

Open to all high schools, students signed up for different sessions according to their interests.

Some of the classes include: Polar Biology: Life Under the Ice, Nursing: On Call for Care, Brain Games, Urine Chemistry, Snakes and I’ve Got Something to Say.

This science-based admissions event will provide an introduction for area high school students to various STEM fields by inviting them to explore classes that give them a taste of majors offered at WLU.
