WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., Sept. 20, 2022 — West Liberty University’s Media Relations welcomed a new member to the team this fall as Senior Annalise Murphy joined the office as a reporter. A double major in journalism and criminal justice, she plans to go into the field of investigative journalism.

“I am so excited to join the office of media relations this fall! I have known and worked with Maureen Zambito on a couple occasions since my freshman year. I am grateful to have the opportunity to work more closely in the office this year and look forward to gaining more experience,” Murphy said.

“I welcome our students interested in careers in journalism and enjoy working with them. They offer a valuable view point and candid feedback that is so important,” said Zambito, director of Media Relations.

Her time spent on the Hilltop is perhaps most notably marked by her involvement with the student newspaper, The Trumpet. Serving as the editor-in-chief for nearly three years, Murphy decided to step down in the spring of 2022 to pursue more experience in broadcast journalism.

Since then, Murphy has been an active part of WLU’s student broadcast station, Newsline 14, and is serving as a producer, reporter and anchor this fall.

Murphy also is an employee of WTRF-7 News in Wheeling, where she works as a news producer. She previously served as an intern at WTRF. and she said she loves her job with News 7 and feels the education and experience she gained at WLU better prepared her for the work she does in the newsroom.

“My education at WLU has prepared me for my job in multiple ways,” Murphy explained.

She continued saying, “I truly feel that getting more involved on campus, such as with The Trumpet, Newsline 14 and Media Relations, helps me gain the confidence needed to thrive in a professional newsroom. Luckily, I have amazing co-workers who are always willing to help me learn and grow as a journalist.”

With plans to graduate in May 2023, Murphy hopes to continue working hard as a reporter. Eventually, she’d like to use both of her degrees to pursue a job in investigative reporting.
